The estate’s diverse landscapes, from woodlands and wildflower banks to newly created heathlands, provide a rich mosaic of habitats. Thanks to these efforts, Silverlake is now home to an incredible 420 species of moth, 21 species of butterfly, 70 species of bee, and 47 species of wasp.
In collaboration with The Species Recovery Trust, Silverlake has also reintroduced the Heath lobelia, an extremely rare plant known for its striking purple flowers each spring. New ponds across the estate, including four large ones by Knighton Heath Woods, now support thriving populations of dragonflies, frogs, toads, and even the protected Great crested newt.
The commitment to biodiversity extends even further. The Dorset Bat Group, supported by the Silverlake Conservation and Community Fund, is actively monitoring bat populations and comparing roosting preferences using different bat boxes. A unique bat house, creatively repurposed from an old sand hopper, now offers safe roosting for a variety of bat species and has become a vital feature on the estate.
Meanwhile, the creation of new heathland, an incredibly important habitat that has declined by over 85% in the UK during the last 150 years has welcomed rare species such as the Dingy mocha moth, Heath tiger beetle, Silver-studded blue butterfly, Nightjars, and Woodlarks.
Silverlake’s dedication doesn’t stop there. A detailed vegetation management plan is in place to support the nationally declining Hazel dormouse, connecting viable habitat corridors to help stabilise and grow this fragile population.
